Ernie Davis

"Ernie Davis." Encyclopedia Britannica. 2008. Encyclopedia Britannica Online. 23 Oct. 2008 .

born Dec. 14, 1939, New Salem, Pa., U.S.
died May 18, 1963, Cleveland, Ohio

This Website mentions various times in Ernie Davis' life. It somewhat serves as a brief biography of his life. It tells me what college he attended, who his idol was, and other useful things. He was named an All-American in both his junior and senior seasons at Syracuse, and in 1961 he was awarded the Heisman Trophy as the most outstanding player in American college football—the first African American so honoured.

This refrence ( Britannica Encyclopedia ) was extremly useful. I liked how I could use the encylopedia online instead of the gigantic book itself.

Ernie Davis: the "Elmira Express"" 23 Oct. 2008 .

This webstie was extremly helpful considering this a website dedicated to Elmira, NY. Ernie Davis moved to Elmira, NY at the age of 12. This website showcases his accomplishments during his college career. He became eligible for the varsity squad in his sophomore year. The season ended with Syracuse earning its first national championship and Ernie led Syracuse to its first bowl victory, for which he was voted the game's most valuable player. He was the first black athlete to win the Heisman Trophy. It states that Ernie himself described the meeting, "We're standing in the anteroom talking when the doors open and here comes the president. He walked up and introduced himself, 'Hi, I'm Jack Kennedy.' We chatted and the president remarked what an honor it was to win the Heisman Trophy. A picture was taken and we left." It also tells me how he died of acute monocytic leukemia on Saturday, May 18, 1963 and was mourned by the nation. It goes on, about how is legacy is still lived on.

Ernie Davis Middle School. Elmira City Schools, Elmira. 23 Oct. 2008

This shows a picture of the Ernie Davis Middle School. This shows that the city had a lot of respect and praise for Ernie Davis to make a school named after him.
